Lying Beside You

It’s summer! Time to tan (intermittently, if you’re in the UK, planning around sudden showers), sit in a park and read. Is there a more glorious combination? And the first book selection of the summer is crucial. It should set the tone for the weeks ahead. It needs to be an all-rounder: equally appropriate for a plane, a morning sitting in a shaft of light, or a late night in bed. Very few books strike this perfect balance, so I’m pleased to recommend LYING BESIDE YOU by Michael Robotham.

If you don’t know Robotham, he’s an absolute master of the thriller genre. His books are genuinely outstanding and this, the third book in the Cyrus Haven series, is my favourite yet.

We are reconnected with one of the most compelling duos in crime fiction – Cyrus and Evie. Cyrus is a forensic psychologist with a dark past and Evie is a true enigma with a special gift: she can tell when someone is lying. Together they are forced to navigate the homecoming of Cyrus’s brother, Elias. Elias is the only family Cyrus has left because, in a moment of psychosis, he murdered their parents and sisters fifteen years ago. Now he’s being released.

It’s an incredible premise and the plot is handled with such dexterity. It’s an absolute ride, and no you don’t need to have read the previous two.

If you’re looking to kick off summer in style, you can’t go wrong with this slick, stylish and pacey novel by a real supremo.
